Young Enterprise Sponsorship!

Following the Young Enterprise Cheshire and Warrington Showcase Event at Barclays Technology Centre last week, two North West schools will go on to compete in the next stage of a national competition to encourage entrepreneurship. Supported by Altrincham-based Bowdon Group, the regional competition gave students from 11 schools the opportunity to present their business successes to an experienced judging panel, with Christleton High School and Cheshire South College emerging as ‘Company of the Year’ and ‘Runner-up Company of the Year’ respectively.
As a guest judge for the competition, Brian Benson, Chairman of Bowdon Group, was extremely impressed with the level of commercial acumen and creativity which the winning schools demonstrated: “This was much more than an academic exercise for the students. It was real-world execution of a business idea, from concept through to launch. The two winning teams had identified gaps in the market and developed products which met a genuine need. Importantly, the products were backed by clear and realistic business plans which I believe have the potential to go on and be a success in the future, so much so I would consider investing in them.
“It was a privilege to be part of the process and refreshing to see that investment is being made in developing business leaders of the future. This will be critical for securing long term economic success not only for the North West, but the UK as a whole.”
While the standard of entries was high from all 11 schools, Christleton High School’s Visulearn team emerged as the overall winner with its Dyslexia support product. The ‘Company of the Year’ accolade was awarded because their idea was unique and had come from a genuine understanding of dyslexia as one of the team is Dyslexic. The product is a box containing everything a teacher would need in the classroom to support students with Dyslexia. Visulearn’s aim is to get at least one box into every school, and as part of their business objectives are approaching businesses to ‘sponsor’ a box for a local school.
Cheshire South College’s Illuminite company was recognised as ‘Runner-up Company of the Year’ for its Festibag – a branded bag which includes 16 essential products including rain poncho, portable charger, hair bobbles, toothbrushes, deodorant and hand sanitizer wipes – all the festival essentials in a ‘bum bag’.
Ben Berry, 18, from Northwich (Cheshire College South), concludes: “It’s been a fantastic experience. My role is Operations Director and I’ve had the chance to work with everyone on the project. From finding wholesalers to ordering products to contributing to the presentation for the competition; I’ve been involved in every aspect of setting up the company which I’ve really enjoyed.”
Nicola Farley, Teacher at Christleton High said,’I am super proud of Visulearn’s achievements to date and the social benefit their product brings to local schools makes the product mutually beneficial to many – local businesses, schools, students and the company itself! They have all worked hard to create a innovative product that is cost effective and fills a gap in the market. It has been great to see them all develop their enterprise skills practically and apply the learning in the classroom to actually running a Ltd company!’
